Halifax is the capital of the province of Nova Scotia, Canada.
History[edit | edit source]
Halifax was established in 1749 by the British, violating a treaty and thus starting Father Le Loutre's War, which pitted the British and New England colonists against the French and the Mi'kmaq nation. The conflict would lead to several devastating attacks, including the Dartmouth massacre of 1751, and, once the British had asserted control, the expulsion of the Acadians.[1]
Still a relatively small settlement in its early days, Halifax boasted a harbormaster's station, a general store and a tavern called the Sorrel & Bay. The town was also home to an Assassin gang's headquarters, which was taken down by the Assassin-turned-Templar Shay Cormac sometime in the 1750s.[2]
During the Seven Years' War, Halifax became a naval base, playing a crucial role in the Siege of Louisburg in 1758. It subsequently became the headquarters for the Royal Navy in North America and would be of vital importance during the American Revolution. The conflict with the Mi’kmaq nation finally came to an end in 1761, with a series of peace treaties that culminated in the "Burying of the Hatchet Ceremony".[1]
