Early life and career[edit | edit source]

Originally from Rennes, France, Beloeil emigrated to Canada in 2000, settling in Montreal.[1] He initially began his career in digital art in 2002 with 4-Elements Studios, in Montreal, on several TV projects and commercials.[2] However, Beloeil has expanded to work with quite a number of different companies throughout the world in both advertising, film, and the computer gaming industry. His first film credit was on the 2003 animated film Pinocchio 3000 as the lighting team lead.[3]

In 2007, he was hired by Ubisoft and began working as a concept artist and digital matte painter in its Cinematic Department, his first project related to the Assassin's Creed series he worked on was the second entry in the series, Assassin's Creed II in 2008. He joined the already established art team during a crunch time and lent his talents.[4] He also created the digital matte art green-screened into the backgrounds of the 2009 short film, Assassin's Creed: Lineage.[5]

In a 2010 interview with Three Pipe Problem, Beloeil revealed that the production and creative teams took a trip to Italy and took many pictures of Florence, Venice, a Rome. He noted it was a big help to the concept artists having that reference.[5]

During the pre-production stage of Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Beloeil worked very closely with Raphael Lacoste to create accurate imagery of historical monuments and street layouts throughout Constantinople by actually visiting the modern-day city of Istanbul. [citation needed]

Details of Beloeil's involvement in Assassin's Creed III were compiled in ImagineFX's issue #89, released December 2012. He worked on environment level concept art and stated that he "really enjoyed working on New York" as it was "a city [he] really [likes] to visit as often as [he] can."[6]

In November 2014, Beloeil participated in a promotion of The Art of Assassin's Creed: Unity Limited Edition offered by Titan Books by signing 500 copies alongside concept artist Ludovic Ribardière. Beloeil had provided many pieces of concept art for Assassin's Creed: Unity.[7] His illustration "Execution" was selected for the 2014 Into the Pixel Collection.[8]

Gilles Beloeil is married and has a son.[1]

Beloeil's talent as an artist has been widely recognized, which is complemented by his diverse understanding of different software mediums, such as Adobe Photoshop, Autodesk Softimage XSI, Autodesk Maya, Digital Fusion, Adobe After Effects, Shake, and Renderman, all of which Gilles boasts an expert level of proficiency with. [citation needed] Beloeil has worked alongside Alexandre Amancio on Far Cry 2. Both he and Amancio were noted to have revolutionized the 3D piping effect of background images with their innovative designs. [citation needed]
