Francisco de la Cuesta (1661 – 1724) was the twelfth Archbishop of Manila from 1707 to 1722, and the acting Governor-General of the Philippines from 1719 to 1721.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1719, then-Governor-General Fernando Manuel de Bustillo Bustamante y Rueda had de la Cuesta and his monks rounded up and imprisoned after the Archbishop refused to surrender people with pending criminal charges who had taken refuge in the Manila Cathedral. In response, de la Cuesta's congregation stormed the Governor-General's mansion and murdered him in the streets.[2] Following Bustamante's assassination, de la Cuesta succeeded him as the new Governor-General.[1]
