Fort San Pedro

Fort San Pedro is a former fortress in Cebu, Philippines, situated in Plaza Independencia, in the pier area of the city. The original fort was built from wood in the late 16th century on the order of Miguel López de Legazpi, the first Governor-General of the Philippines, before being rebuilt in the early 17th century using stone to repel Muslim pirates. The current structure dates from 1738 and is the oldest triangular bastion fort in the Philippines.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

In 1725, Fort San Pedro was taken over by a native resistance led by the Visayan chief Rajah, who was able to easily infiltrate it thanks to most of the Spanish garrison being preoccupied with an ongoing riot in the city. After eliminating the few Spanish soldiers that remained at the fort, the rebels awaited the arrival of a ship to get them away from Cebu, as their original plan to escape from the city's harbor had been thwarted by the Zhang Wei Union.[2]

However, the Union members followed Rajah and his men to the fort, and Edward Kenway, Shimazu Saito, and John Young were able to infiltrate it using the Celestial Chariot, a prototype hot air balloon built by Yun Pyeong-Gyu.[2] While John remained inside the Celestial Chariot to provide cover fire, Edward and Saito descended from the balloon using its ropes as ziplines and were confronted by Rajah's men. Evading them, the pair found Rajah, only to discover that the Visayan chief, corrupted by the crescent amulet in his possession, had killed most of his men for disagreeing with his tactics.[3]

While Edward decided to face Rajah alone, Saito went to search for a sea log which the rebels had hidden nearby,[4] and managed to retrieve it from a group of fleeing civilians. Meanwhile, Edward defeated Rajah by separating him from the amulet, only to then be confronted by Xiao Han, the Mentor of the Chinese Assassins, who killed Rajah and demanded that Edward hand over the amulet.[5] As Edward refused, the two fought each other to a stalemate, which was broken up by Saito.[6]

After Xiao Han was joined by his fellow Assassins Liu Qing and Xue Yan, they defeated Saito, forcing Edward to reluctantly use the amulet against them. With the Chinese Assassins subdued, Edward and Saito returned to the Celestial Chariot and escaped Fort San Pedro, just as the Spanish Army arrived to reclaim control of the stronghold.[7]
