Eleusis Telesterion

The Eleusis Telesterion was the temple of Demeter within the Sanctuary of Eleusis in the Sacred Plains of Demeter in Attika, Greece.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The Telesterion was a large building about 50 meters across, with eight rows of seats, and 40 columns which supported the upper floor and roof. In the middle of the ceiling was a opening for light. Beneath this opening was a room called the anaktoron (English, 'palace'), the innermost sanctum wherein the sacred objects of the Eleusinian Mysteries were held.[1]

Use[edit | edit source]

Within the Telesterion people participated in the Eleusinian Mysteries, initiating them into the cult dedicated to the Greek goddesses Demeter and Persephone.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

According to the myth, the sanctuary was built for Demeter in return for her teaching the art of agriculture.[3] During the Peloponnesian War, the Telesterion was heavily guarded, though this didn't deter the Spartan misthios Kassandra in her attempts to enter the place.[4]
