San Zaccaria

Chiesa di San Zaccaria (English: Church of Saint Zechariah) is a major church located in Venice's eastern Castello District.

History[edit | edit source]

First built in the 9th century, San Zaccaria is dedicated to John the Baptist's father Zechariah, who is supposedly buried there. The church burned down in 1105, killing more than a 100 nuns. It was later rebuilt around 1170 and then later redone with a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance styles.[1] During the late 15th century, the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore visited the church and climbed to its top to access a viewpoint.[2]
