San Zaccaria

Chiesa di San Zaccaria (English: Church of Saint Zechariah) is a major church located in Venice's eastern Castello District.

History

First built in the 9th century, San Zaccaria is dedicated to John the Baptist's father Zechariah, who is supposedly buried there. The church burned down in 1105, killing more than a 100 nuns. It was later rebuilt around 1170 and then later redone with a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance styles. During the late 15th century, the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore visited the church and climbed to its top to access a viewpoint.
