California is the most populous state of the United States of America, located on its west coast.

California Gold Rush[edit | edit source]
In the mid-19th century, gold was discovered in a mine owned by the Swiss pioneer John Sutter, attracting numerous prospectors to California in search of the precious metal and starting the California Gold Rush. However, this period saw many acts of violence and genocide perpetrated on the indigenous peoples of California, such as the Maidu, who were enslaved and forced to mine for gold.[1]
In 1852, an American Assassin pursued Sutter while he traveled through the Great Basin Desert, and forced him to return the gold he had obtained through the labour of the enslaved Maidu people.[1]
Modern times[edit | edit source]
In 1952, the American rocket engineer Jack Parsons attempted to leave the city of Pasadena with his research, to which Abstergo Industries responded by blowing up his laboratory.[2]
By 2012, Alan Rikkin, the CEO of Abstergo Industries and a Templar Grand Master, lived in Monterey County.[3]
On 29 May 2013, the Altaïr II dropped off Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings in California to commence their mission to spy for the Assassins in America.[4]
In 2015, Charlotte de la Cruz lived in San Diego, where she worked for the Malta Banking Corporation until her recruitment to the Assassins by Galina Voronina and Xavier Chen. After escaping an attack by Abstergo agents, Charlotte was brought to the Assassins' hideout near the Salton Sea in southern California, where she used an Animus to relive the memories of her ancestor Tom Stoddard during the Salem witch trials to find a Piece of Eden.[1]
Later, believing the Templars would eventually track them down, the Assassins abandoned their hideout and loaded the Animus into a van to allow Charlotte to continue exploring Stoddard's memories during their relocation.[5] Galina and Xavier soon grew impatient and, believing the rumors of a Piece of Eden in Salem to be false, decided to rescue Joseph Laurier from the Abstergo headquarters in San Diego.[6]
However, Charlotte discovered that Joseph had been lying to the Assassins, and attempted to rescue Galina and Xavier from the trap they walked into. Although too late to save Xavier, she managed to overpower Joseph and escape with Galina and Kody Adams, departing San Diego.[7]
