Sebastián Vizcaíno (1548 – 1624) was a Spanish explorer, soldier, and diplomat.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 1613, Vizcaíno was assigned to accompany the Japanese diplomat Hasekura Tsunenaga and his party to a mission to New Spain. However, his relations with the Japanese soured, due to his cruel demeanor and arrogance. While on the voyage, his stature afforded him the rights of a simple passenger.[2]
In early 1614,[1] upon their arrival in Acapulco, Vizcaíno was seriously injured after an incident with his Japanese crewmates,[3] where Tsunenaga had wounded him with his katana. Due to his injuries, he spent three months to recover from his wounds,[4] while the rest of his party left and traveled further into New Spain.[3]
