The Mongolian Brotherhood of Assassins was the guild of Assassins active in the Mongol Empire.

Assassination of Genghis Khan[edit | edit source]
The Mongolian Assassins were one of the few groups who fought against the Mongol hordes. Although they were few in number, they were able to slow down the campaigns of the Mongol Empire on several occasions.[1]
When the leader of the Levantine Assassins, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, his wife Maria and their son Darim traveled to the Mongol Empire to stop its leader Genghis Khan, who was in possession of a Sword of Eden, the Mongolian Assassin Qulan Gal assisted the family. After making several plans, Qulan and Altaïr infiltrated the Mongol camp in Xingging, near Xia Province. However, Altaïr had lost some of his skills in his old age and accidentally alerted the Mongols, being wounded in the process.[2]
Qulan was able to bring Altaïr to safety,[2] and in the process the two Assassins came across a bound Nergüi, a young apprentice who had been captured and disfigured by the Mongols while scouting their camp. They freed him, and the trio regrouped with Maria and Darim on the hill overlooking the camp. Together, the five Assassins then used flaming arrows to force Genghis Khan to flee on horseback, granting Qulan and Darim an opportunity to chase and eliminate him.[3]

Following Genghis Khan's assassination, Qulan Gal took Nergüi as his apprentice and trained him to the full rank of Assassin. In 1241, while Qulan killed Chagatai Khan, Nergüi assassinated his brother, the Great Khan Ögedei, to sow chaos among the Mongol Empire and halt Batu Khan's advance on Europe.[4]
In 1263, Nergüi targeted the Russian prince Alexander Nevsky, a liaison to Hülegü Khan and a suspected Templar. As the two fought, Nergüi discovered that Nevsky shared his resentment of the Mongols due to their murder of his father and had secretly played them against each other. Nevertheless, the Assassin ended Nevsky's life and respectfully gave him his last rites.[5]
The last known high-profile assassination carried out by the Mongolian Brotherhood came in 1265, when Nergüi killed Hülegü Khan himself in retribution for his sacking of Masyaf and the destruction of the Levantine Assassins.[6]
