Brothir (died c. 875) was a Viking warrior in the late 9th century. He was the elder brother of Broder and Valdis, and the brother-in-law of Oswald of East Anglia. Though rude and obnoxious at first glance, he and his brother looked out for their clan and their younger sister.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
Originated from what later became the Denmark, Brothir and his siblings emigrated to England to escape from Valdis' abusive spouse Rued.[2] The trio and their clan landed in East Anglia, a former Anglo-Saxon kingdom now under the influence of their cousin Halfdan Ragnarsson which had been home to numerous Norse and Danes since the early Viking incursions in 865.[3]
By 873, the region governed by the steward Finnr, appointed by Halfdan to seek a suitable king to lead the kingdom alongside Valdis as an alliance between the Anglo-Saxons and Norse-Danes. Oswald, the last thegns who served under the previous King Edmund was chosen to wed with Valdis. Both Brothir and Broder were unwilling to support their sister's betrothal to Oswald for he had no fighting experience and was deemed too unfit and weak.[4] Steming from their sister's previous relationship with Rued,[2] the two brothers were protective of her and worried about their clan's future if their engagement came to be.[4]
Along with Broder, Brothir answered Eivor's call for aid and joined her allied coalition in Suthsexe to rescue her step-brother Sigurd Styrbjornsson, who was captured by the Order of the Ancients Paladin Fulke.[5] While in camp, the group were ambushed by a group of Saxons led by Fulke's Champion. Brothir chased after the champion with Broder, but was killed in the ensuing conflict.
