Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Heart of Glass is a two-part allusion to a character and their personal weapon in the American web series Critical Role's third campaign.[2] Visually and in its description text, it copies elements from the war hammer[3] that the Genasi barbarian Ashton Greymoore wields in conjunction with probability chaos magic. Before joining the campaign's main party, Ashton was in a mercenary gang hired for a smash and grab burglary at a manor. When the resident interrupted them, Ashton was magically launched off a balcony and suffered near-fatal wounds to their head upon landing. After a local tinkerer used glass that would have been Ashton's payment to repair the elven-earth elemental's skull fracture,[4] they melted the leftovers into a mass that Ashton used as their new hammer head, threading it through the handle and further embellishing the weapon by engraving "Fuck off" along its base in reflection of their punk personality.[3]
Unlike the other gear in the Critical Role Weapon Pack that has equivalents in the 2025 video game Assassin's Creed: Shadows, war hammers are not available for player use, so Ubisoft decided to represent it as a kanabō. Although Ashton's weapon is unidentified in-series,[2] this kanabō's name is still connected to Ashton. It references the American new wave band Blondie's 1978 song of the same name, which American singer Miley Cyrus would cover in September 2020 for the iHeartRadio Music Festival[5] and whose version Ashton's voice actor Taliesin Jaffe included in his playlist of songs that he felt were thematically appropriate for Ashton.[6]

From a game design perspective, they probably wanted unique weapons, so it was the kanabo, yumi bow, long katana, kusarigama, or naginata; there aren't any iconic spears or longswords, and nothing equivalent to the kusarigama, so that leaves the bow (Fenthras our only option) or the kanabo (no greatclubs, so either Ashton's hammer or a sized up Pike's mace?).
