Ivan Krause was a professor at the University of Basel in Switzerland during the 16th century. He was a colleague to Bombastus and Maria Amiel. He was married to a woman named Lara.

During Maria Amiel's absence from Basel, Bombastus became increasingly difficult to deal with, going so far as to insult every physician at the university and getting into a brawl with Doctor von Rothenburg. Upon her return, she went to Krause's house, where his wife invited her in for tea while they waited for Krause's return. When Ivan returned, he updated Amiel on Bombastus' situation.[1][2]
Amiel then left to locate the professor, finding him burning books.[2] She and her companion, Giovanni Borgia, dragged Bombastus away from the pyre and led him to Krause's house, hoping that they could take care of him. Lara was unhappy, but agreed. However, Bombastus escaped that night. Ivan vowed to find him, though Giovanni and Maria were convinced there was nothing anyone could do for the poor man.[3]
