―Description of HMS Drake[src]
HMS Drake

HMS Drake was a Royal Navy schooner that sailed in the Caribbean Sea during the Golden Age of Piracy. In June 1716, the French pirate Alonzo Batilla captured HMS Drake after it ran aground in a narrow canyon in Cozumel, New Spain, commandeering it to to tail a Portuguese merchant ship undetected under a false flag. However, he had to abandon his chase when the pirate hunter Alvaro attacked in a Man O' War seeking a bounty on Batilla's quartermaster Jumao, a former plantation slave who had killed his owner and escaped. Batilla evaded Alonzo's attacks, crippled his ship, and fled using the schooner's small size and greater maneuverability to outpace the warship, later adding HMS Drake to his pirate fleet.[1]
