Rhode Island, officially known as the State of Rhode Island, is a state located in the northeastern section of the United States, bordered by Connecticut and Massachusetts. It was one of the thirteen colonies that claimed independence from Great Britain during the American Revolutionary War.
History[edit | edit source]
Rhode Island was the location of Fort Wolcott, which many of the British soldiers stationed there considered a meaningless outpost. In 1773, the Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton sailed there to find a piece of the map to William Kidd's treasure and ordered the Aquila to bombard the fort to cover his escape.[1]
Prior to the Revolutionary War, the Colonial Assassins aided James Mitchell Varnum, giving him the knowledge and training he needed to form a rebel militia. The Assassins continued to support Varnum's Regiment once the war broke out.[2] Despite the British occupation of Newport, the civilians there were very much united in their desire to secede from the Crown.[3] Ratonhnhaké:ton later sent his Assassin apprentices to the city to secure a secret shipment of gunpowder.[4] He also sent them to Providence to eliminate a Templar hideout near the city's coast.[5]
In 1777, the British Lieutenant-General Richard Prescott was captured from his farmhouse near Newport by the Continental Army, who exchanged him for a captive Charles Lee, after his hideout was discovered by Ratonhnhaké:ton and the spymaster Jeremiah Scudder. In the process, Ratonhnhaké:ton rescued one of Scudder's spies held prisoner by Prescott, Lawrence Cato.[6] Revealing himself as a former Assassin, Cato informed Ratohnhaké:ton that Scudder was secretly a Templar, leading to the Assassin tracking him down and eliminating him.[7]
In 1778, the Continental Army lost the Battle of Rhode Island after issues with the French Navy. General John Sullivan wrote a strongly worded letter, and the Assassins persuaded Admiral d'Estaing to ignore Sullivan's comments, preventing the Franco-American alliance from falling apart.[8]
In 1784, at the request of Ratonhnhaké:ton, the Louisianan Assassin Aveline de Grandpré travelled to Newport to recruit Patience Gibbs, a former slave captured by the Templar doctor Edmund Judge.[9] Rescuing her from Fort Washington, Patience refused to ally with Aveline and attempted to flee, leading to her recapture by Judge, who forced her to surrender her charm.[10]
Aveline saved Patience once again, who agreed to work together to retrieve the charm from Judge. Confronting him in the Newport Tower, they assassinated the Templar and retrieved the charm, revealed to be the other half of the Piece of Eden Patience had been keeping. After demonstrating the charm's functions, Patience accepted Aveline's invite to join the Assassin Brotherhood and left Newport with her.[11]
