Lucy Baldwin
Lucy Baldwin (born 1689) was an English pirate and shipwright active in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy. Born on the Bahamian plantation islet of Black Island, her mother died in Lucy's childhood while her father John was habitually either absent or drunk, forcing her maternal grandfather Theodore Braddock to care for her and teach her valuable life skills like the carpentry trade and self-defense with firearms. Although she was raised by a wealthy local planter, she struggled with the fact that she was effectively orphaned and tried to cope by yielding to her adventurous spirit, regularly carousing in taverns and travelling local trade routes on passing merchant ships without a specific destination.[1]
After meeting and joining some pirates sailing out of Havana, Lucy became highly sought-after by many crews for years due to her exceptional woodworking skills and shooting accuracy, and her reputation in such things were almost rivalled by tales of her wild celebrations. Following Theordore's unexpected death, authorities falsely accused her of his murder and sent the Royal Navy's pirate hunter Lieutenant Robert Maynard to catch her.[1] Cornered by Maynard's forces, she put up such fierce resistance that it allegedly took three to face her,[2] but he successfully captured and delivered her as prisoner to a Royal Navy Man O' War near Salt Key Bank[3] to await execution by hanging.
As a famed shipwright, news of her incarceration quickly spread to the Republic of Pirates' members. Shortly after the pirate captain Edward Kenway took Great Inagua[3] as his base of operations in late 1715,[4] his quartermaster Adéwalé told him of Lucy's situation. Seeking to recruit Lucy and use her talents to improve his brig, Kenway infiltrated the British ship and freed her before promptly sinking the assembled escort fleet to ensure that there were no witnesses.[2] Sailing to Nassau, he repeatedly tried to hire her while lauding the Republic's ideals. Initially ambivalent to the idea but seeing that Kenway would not give up if he believed he might benefit from something, Lucy proposed a counter-deal where she would join him only if he helped her recover Theodore's inheritance before John and his lawyers could take it..[5]
