==Biography==
In 1582, Tokubei worked as a watch commander at [[Himeji Castle]] under the orders of [[Kuroda Kanbei]], who served [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi|Hashiba Hideyoshi]]. However, he had a gambling addiction, which led him to owe a favor. He sought to repay the favor by having a guest bribe him for entrance to an upcoming ''{{Wiki|renga}}kai''<ref name="DB">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[Database: Tokubei]]</ref> On the day of the meeting, Tokubei worked and welcomed all guests, including the [[Japanese Brotherhood of Assassins|Kakushiba ''ikki'']] members [[Fujibayashi Naoe]] and [[Yasuke]]. However, when the ''rengakai'' was attacked, Tokubei realized his error and ran away from his post.<ref name="The Rengakai">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[The Rengakai]]</ref>

From his post and ashamed of himself, Tokubei hid from his wife [[Suzu]] and the guards at the gambling den at a [[Himeji Guild Storage|storage facility]].<ref name="Losing Hand">''[[Assassin's Creed: Shadows]]'' – [[Losing Hand]]</ref><ref name="DB"/> When the pair traced his tracks, they found him nearly naked and brought him out into the open. However, Tokubei ran from them but only got as far in the middle of [[Himeji]]. Confronted by Naoe and Yasuke, he admitted his debts but was encouraged him to aid them back at the castle. Before leaving, he gave them a note that he recovered about a secret correspondence at [[Junisho Shrine]].<ref name="Losing Hand"/>

Within a day after the ''rengakai'', Himeji Castle was attacked again, as the true culprit was [[Ukita Naoie]], who was secretly part of the [[Shinbakufu]] and whose son [[Ukita Hideie|Hideie]] was a prisoner under Kanbei's watch. However, with Naoe and Yasuke having prepared for his attack, Yasuke was later joined by Tokubei, who aided in the defense of Kanbei.
