Yangzhou Prison was a Qin detention facility in Yangzhou City, Shang Commandery. During the reign of Qin Shi Huang, it was used by Great General Meng Tian, whose residence and base-of-operations were in Yangzhou.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
In 215 BCE[2] when Touman Chanyu of the Xiongnu broke terms of peace with the Qin by renewing an assault on the Great Wall,[1][3][4] Meng Tian had his guards arrest all the Xiongnu in the city that Touman had previously given to the Qin as political collateral.[4] They were held at Yangzhou Prison to await execution. Among them was Touman's eldest son, Modu, whom Touman had desired to eliminate as a contender for Xiongnu kingship—the goal of the attack having been to trigger his death in the first place.[1]
By chance, Meng Tian was cooperating with a youxia to investigate collusion between a Qin military commander, Yang Duanhe, and the Xiongnu and advised the youxia that they might find answers with one of the prisoners. While Modu was in the midst of being interrogated, the youxia broke him out of jail in hopes that this would establish a debt he would have to honour by acting as their liaison with the Xiongnu.[1]
