Xicotencatl I or Xicotencatl the Elder (c. 1425 – c. 1522), was a long-lived tecuhtli of Tlaxcala during the time of the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire.

Biography[edit | edit source]

On 31 August 1519, as the Spanish began their invasion of Tlaxcaltec lands, Xicotencatl the Younger and the Elder were mentioned in conversation by a warrior to the tecuhtli Chimalpopoca in passing as they discussed the actions of the Elder and his planned peace negotiations with the Spanish invaders. Something which made Xicotencatl the Elder to be considered a coward in the eyes of Chimalpopoca.[1]

After Chimalpopoca was influenced by the dagger held by Hernán Cortés, he became their messenger and in turn convinced Xicotencatl to side with the Spaniards in allying the Tlaxcaltecs to overthrown the Aztec Empire.[2][3]
