Bell handing Jacob and Evie voltaic bombs

A voltaic bomb was a less-lethal explosive device which emitted electrical shocks upon detonation. It was an early type of stun grenade invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1868 for the British Assassins Evie and Jacob Frye.

Design[edit | edit source]

The voltaic bomb was essentially an early prototype electric grenade. Upon detonation, it would discharge a blast of electrical currents. Although its main function was to incapacitate enemy targets, the voltage of its currents was high enough to cause potentially lethal injury.[1] To ensure that the users themselves could remain safe from the blasts, Bell also designed special soles which nullified the electrical shocks when worn inside boots. The casing for the grenades were made from metal, and its overall shape was likened by its inventor to a plum.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

In 1868, in response to constant harassment by thugs sent by Crawford Starrick, Alexander Graham Bell decided to invent a self-defence tool in the form of a less-lethal grenade. He came up with three formulae for the bomb's composition, but he had not yet gotten around to testing them when Starrick's Blighters returned to attack his laboratory. Fortunately for him, his Assassin associates, the twins Jacob and Evie Frye, had just stopped by to visit moments earlier, and he was able to use their help in verifying the correct formula.[2]

Quickly handing to them the voltaic-resistant soles and three differently shaped grenades, each containing a different formula, Bell went outside to stall the Blighters. Their plan was for him to weave in fruit-based code words as he spoke with the thugs which served to signal to the Frye twins on the rooftop which bomb to try out. This made for some awkward conversation as Bell randomly slipped in comments about "pears" and "apples" in turn, much to the thugs' confusion. Neither the pear-shaped nor the apple-shaped grenades produced the desired result when thrown at the Blighters, only emitting stinky gas that annoyed them, but the final "plum" bomb successfully knocked out the gangsters with electricity, validating Bell's invention.[2] From then on, the Frye twins would carry voltaic bombs with them in their missions, and they later upgraded the design twice over to enhance its efficacy.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The voltaic bomb is a tool in Assassin's Creed: Syndicate (2015). They serve as the game's iteration of a stun grenade and resemble the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) grenade in video games of other media franchises, albeit adapted to fit the Victorian era setting. They are unlocked with the main story memory "Breaking News".
