"What if AC3 had a horrible ending?" Well that's just it. Anyway they end it, it'll turn out the same to me. Either Desmond dies while saving the world or he doesn't. Or maybe a Deus Ex Mashina scene like in ME3. I don't really mind if they show the entire world blow up again =P. As long as there will be AC4.
