After a fashion, Daniel more or less being driven crazy at such young age makes his story less tragic than Clay's, to me.

Clay had gotten a grasp of his life before he got royally screwed. His world got turned completely inside out, whereas Daniel never really knew any other sort...save as lived by others.

Somehow, I feel like I'm not expressing the idea clearly... :p
