I wasn't initially interested in an ancient Israel setting during the time of Christ for an AC game and I also thought it would be a tricky period to cover without causing offence.

But socially it's a very interesting time and I also stumbled upon this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sicarii A group of Assassins who use concealed daggers. Some scholars believe that Judas belonged to this group of Assassins. They worked to expel the Romans from Judea. In the Assassin's Creed universe, the Roman Empire was controlled by the Templars, so this fts the meta-story well.

Also, Judas is a very interesting character, he could be an Assassin turned Templar. He may have initially been in favour of free speech but when he saw that Jesus' teachings could lead to a dangerous conflict whereby the Roman Empire retaliates and kills all his followers, Judas decides to betray him to prevent any bloodshed. (An action in line with the Templar ideology).

He later regrets his actions or is so grief-stricken that he commits suicide.

This idea come about mainly due to the fact that I just saw Jesus Christ Superstar with the awesome Tim Minchin, but I think it stands up as a good idea for a game regardless!
