I don't think we can suppose that he is fighting the British specifically. It is in the canon that Assassins have been known to fight both sides of a war as both sides are rife with Templars. (AC1 Crusaders/Saracens, as well as WW2 being fought by Templars on both sides). If the character is Native American, then he will be fighting for the freedom of his land, and let us not forget that the American Revolutionaries were also invaders of North America.
