Suffering from withdrawal most likely. With all the hallucinations brought on by the bleeding effect (A serious case of bleeding effect too) it's no wonder he would want to go back in. The animus would provide him with a sense of stability rather than walking around aimlessly watching a simple shop owner turn into a templar. Might be a bit much to handle don't you think.
