They didn't invent their own language... in game they speak Latin-based Italian which was pretty much how everyone talked at that time. If I'm not mistaken, Italy used to speak Latin before. The Renaissance saw the emergence of what is closer to modern-day Italian.

All languages are like that, English too. Resteth in peace, for thou must foreseek the truth in death's beseech :P
