I agree with how the First Civ make the story better in providing a somewhat logical explanation to the PoEs, and I especially liked the mind-f*ck twist ending of AC2 where they were suddenly and dramatically revealed. However, I think they became too large and too "normal" a part of the story as the writers tried to answer all the questions raised by their presence. I think the story works best where there is intrigue and mystery, which is why AC1 was so good, because the player had no idea what was going on with the Templars in the 10th century, nor with the Apple, nor with subject 16 or Abstergo. But when we got to AC3, all the mystery had gone; we knew all about Subject 16, Abstergo, the Templars, and the First Civ. Hopefully Black Flag will either explore Erudito, or even better, introduce a new, very mysterious faction, to bring back the mystery the series has lacked as of late.

TL;DR: Mystery made the series great, but with each game the mysteries have gone and the First Civ story has grown ever more fantastical. Less of that, and more mystery, please.
