I, after hearing Washington and Franklin were in AC3, remembered that they were Freemasons, a shadowy organisation that people weren't really sure existed, assumed that the Freemasons were the cover story or new name for the Assassins. I completely forgot that the Freemasons were, in the real world, believed to be the remnants of the Templars.
