I just remembered my favourite quote; it comes from Fable II: "Give a begger a million dollars, and he will buy bread, but once he is full, he will realise that he can buy more than just bread". Meaning, that if the Templars were given the power to control people, at first they will control them to ensure world peace, but then what, they'll get bored having completed the goal they've been trying to achieve for thousands of years, and so they start using their power for their own personal benefits. Put another way, the hunt is more exhilerating than the kill.
