Yeah. We didn't see all that much of Maccers in AC2, and for some reason I just didn't like him all that much...He always seemed too suspicious to be an Assassin (ironic, I know). And we know that he gets really upset at Ezio for letting Rodrigo live. I'm just tossing a theory out here but maybe he saw how fast Ezio was progressing as an Assassin and let him go after Rodrigo because he thought he wouldn't come back alive (and thus, he eliminated a threat to his power as an Assassin leader). It would give cause for him to be so upset at Ezio, and it would also give cause for him to try to get rid of Ezio again in Rome by betrayal...hmm...
