There's a certain phrase that goes "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind".

If you have to kill someone to keep your family safe, what of that other person's family? Would they want to avenge their dead relative and kill you too?

This is why vigilantism doesn't work. People can think that it's up to them to uphold justice, but when they do, they're just as bad as the person that they're trying to punish.

Leave the police's job to them, they're professionals and they make sure that they're doing the right thing, and not taking it to extremes. That's not to say that some police members are perfect when it comes to morals or are corruptible, but these people are weeded out of the force eventually and pay for their crimes.
