They were real, and so were the Templars, but unlike their in-game depiction, they weren't archenemies. In fact, they had no connection with each other whatsoever. They never encountered each other, and they lived far from each other. The Assassins were also disbanded before the Templars made any major public move. They didn't fight with anyone over any artifact. They DID fight the Mongols, though, and they assassinated several people. They didn't kill William as shown in the first, but they killed his son Conrad. They were real, but they did't last long enough for everyone to hold belief in their existance. Templars are the same, but they are more well known, and their still some members and places related to them today. You never know. You can't always believe in manmade history. Wheter it's inference or purely fiction, you can't believe everything. Time machines don't exist yet.
