So basically it looks like some cretin up top at Ubisoft is like "You worked with THQ Montreal? Well fuck you, you're fired."

It's probably not as simple as that, but certainly looks like it, and given how publishing companies nowadays are led by idiots who care about having cashcow titles over quality ones, it wouldn't surprise me if it actually boiled down to this.
