How exactly would AC4 not taking place in WWI or WWII take away the essence (I assume you mean that) of the franchise? I don't see any form of logic. They never said they are following any kind of pattern with the settings; if they did continually move forward in time, they would narrow their own options down drastically. And there are still other options besides the World Wars...
