I think modern times is next anyway. Sure, Ubisoft SAID ACIII was the end of Desmond's story, but that may change. Someone on YouTube discovered an interesting pattern: every three centuries or so, a new assassin emerges.
1100s - Altaïr
1400s - Ezio
1700s - Connor
2000s - Desmond
So, I think there will be at least one more game, with Desmond as the main assassin.
