If ubisoft hopes to continue the naval combat in the game following Black Flag, I see only one possiblity, and that is the Anglo-Spanish War from 1585 to 1604. This would be interesting as, ignoring the almost 20 year time span and the continuation of great naval gameplay, we may or may not be able to revisit the auditore line, as there are whispers that the Flavia's descendents (the elder child of Ezio and Desmond's progenitor) immigrate to France, which is where the war partly takes place.
