To the person going who was aware, I think it's not a question of location, but a question of era. I'm pretty sure many learn of those in history classes.

The Crusades? Common knowledge

Renaissance? Thought not quite known, I'm fairly sure Da Vinci and Christoph Colomb ring some bells for some

American Revolution? Again common knowledge

It does not matter that people didn't know the details, the thing is, people know it happened and that's enough. That's why I can only see Ubisoft goes for settings that people are at least vaguely aware of.
