The war was costing Britain ALOT and a lot of British people were against the war. In any case Britain lost and America became an independant nation, then what? Best for the Templars to infiltrate the Continental army early, consolidate themselves, and work their way into the government. That way, if Britain lost, they could still have influence over this new nation. There are many reasons why there would be Templars on both sides.
