Aquilus, Altaïr, Ezio, Connor, Aveline, Nikolai, Daniel, Clay and Desmond are only a fraction of the millions of characters that they could make for this franchise. Desmond is the pillar of the ongoing main installments, but he isn't the person that makes up the entire universe. He is the "chosen one," but they could easily tell the story of someone else. The Fall and The Chain already did this with Daniel, and The Lost Archive did with Clay to an extent. They could easily move on to another person who gets thrown into the Animus. Maybe one of the other Animus subjects; maybe an Assassin or Templar in a story that takes place after the events of AC3. Endless possibilities. Desmond doesn't tie anything down. Much like with Altaïr, Ezio, Connor and the others, his story isn't endless, and if they keep stretching it out the modern day part of the games would just get boring and uninteresting. That part too needs to be freshened up.
