Perhaps the point isn't how the style impacted the story, but rather, how the story impacted the style. From all accounts Connor's old life as an average Native American is going to be brutally torn apart by encroaching colonists.

He probably would have seen or did things in the process that made him, I don't know, seethe with rage or something. So maybe the violence and brutality he shows is part of that anger. He says he wants to fight against tyranny, but I'm willing to bet a part of him is just glad he's butchering somebody who looks like the guy who shot his mother or something.

Of course the Dev's want to make him into a different character, but they do know that they can't make him different without supplying a good narrative to explain why. Nobody's the way they are for no reason.
