How can the Cold War not be a turning point in history? It was the leadup to the collapse of the second world super power to exist after WW2. Now in the world we've only got the US as the remaining superpower. Korean/Vietnam Wars. Cuban Missile Crisis. War in Aghanistan.. Those things were all related to the cold war.

As for the Dakota War... It's turning point is that after the defeat of the Lakota tribes and them being placed on those awful reservations, it allowed white people to move more safely as well as the mining of gold found on tribal lands. And some of the events during the time like the building of the railroads and the old west are pretty important I think. At least they make a ton of movies about them that it's got ta be.
