Well not really are they all pawns. Some of the presidents are definitely "Larger than life" though. During war time the president is the commander-in-chief. He doesn't run the battles like his generals but he runs the war.

Someone who profited from the civil war... Munitions suppliers, Crop growers (Large portions of the souths arritable land was destroyed by Sherman's march). Lumber yards (wood to rebuild homes). Doctors (Long term injury issues)...

For those who lost money because of the war... Any business that operated with slave labor.
