Well if anything, shouldn't the fact that he ascended to the Papacy make him a better villain? I mean, back then the Pope was pretty much the most powerful man in the world. Seems like a pretty good place to be for an awesome villain! Think of all the connections and strings this guy had to pull to get to where he was. The fact that he was able to do it seems much scarier than Al Mualim being able to become the head of the Assassins.
