Well the middle east is more than just nations bordering on the east side of the mediterranean, it extends much further than that... but I guess most of the feel has been overused.
South America could be during the mentioned Chilean revolution, the Incas, Conquistadors, or like people have already mentioned a Brazil story. There is a good amount of African history and because there are many occasional gaps Ubisoft can find ways to fit in there easily (why did the history have to oral). It seems like India might be a big contender according to this blog, but yes South East Asia the more I think about it the more appealing it can be.
You are right, I honestly didn't care too much for the crusades or know anything at all about Renaissance Italian politics. I had learned about the Ottoman Empire for personal heritage. So South East Asia could be a whole new world.
