I agree with Jasca here. if they'd thrown in that bit of dialogue to the game as it is, people who aren't as invested in related media as us would have no idea what the hell he's on about. Especially since the fact Rebecca gives out most of the information about Cross' past -after- he's killed.

If they brought over the character development from the comics and fleshed him out to be an actual skilled adversary, and not a random guy with some chinfluff, hobo overcoat, that retarded cast-looking armwarmer and random mental breakdown, it would fit then.
