As far as we know now, he didn't wear the armor right away after he created it. Altaïr started writing the Codex during Bloodlines. The armor is featured in Codex page #19, and as of Codex page #24, he didn't have any children yet, and he was still wearing his Master Assassin robes when he conceived his first child.
