The people who did not like him didn't because of his 'shallow' personality and 'uselessness'. Killing him off to introduce another similar (and likely silent - seeing as it's 'us') protagonist wouldn't seem like a very good move by Ubisoft.

I figure it's mostly because his story was already going on for five games, and his story was always intended to end in this installment.
