Here's another theory:

Ubi said that they will have a Kenway Trilogy just like the Ezio Trilogy. So far, there have onlt been 2 games in the Kenway Trilogy and therefore there must be another Kenway whose life we will be reliving. This could be Edward's grandfather as Edward's father seems to have knowledge regarding these "secret orders" and he once even told Edward that he is getting mixed up with dangerous people. (Source: Assassin's Creed: Black Flag (Novel))

He might know about this because his father (Edward's grandfather) was an Assassin (or Templar). This leads me to believe that we would play as Edward's grandfather during the early 17th century.
