Yes, but I don't think the Templars really used the papacy before be an official order. In a file of Revelation, they said that Sylvester II was a Templar but was branded as an heretic and it's Bernard de Clairvaux who considered to use Church as an ally. I think the Templars were for the Caesaropapism, where the Emperor is the leader of the Christendom and not the pope, as Constantin, Charlemagne and Otto. It was the pope Gregory VII who strenghted the power of papacy over the emperors. The road to Canossa of the emperor Henry IV show the power of the pope, so maybe it's why the Templars decided to became an official Order, to be protected by the Papacy.
