You don't need to take any cogs out, you use them as pulleys, maximising effort with less exertion...... I have a real hidden blade that uses a wheellock system, similar to that of the pistols and rifles of old times (and in game) that Leonardo Da Vinci invented....... And another blade that uses a pin (like grenade) and springs but that one doesn't return on itself, you have to push it back in and replace the pin (more than likely what they used in Altair's day).......
